Pinterest has remodeled its iPad application to accommodate the would-be world traveler with a new version mapped around Place Pins, the location-aware pin type released late last year.
Four-year-old Pinterest is the popular service for collecting digital ideas and saving them to boards. The company, according to ComScore, has a desktop audience of more than 48.2 million people, though mobile now accounts for 75 percent of usage.
Place Pins debuted in late November on Web, iPhone, and Android and attempted to help members make geographic sense, with the help of location partners like Foursquare, out of the 750 million pre-existing destination pins with the ultimate goal of helping facilitate practical or aspirational travel planning.
In the first 24 hours after launch, members made 100,000 Place Boards, the company told CNET. Now, less than three months later, there are more than 2 million Place Boards.
With version 3.4 of the iPad app, available now on the App Store, the new places dynamic has been ported to Apple's tablet with an emphasis on map-based world exploration. Place Boards on iPad come with a map atop the screen and pinned locations featured below. A person can scroll down on the map to view a full-screen map and browse places with their fingers, or tap a pin to get a more detailed view of the venue.
The application was specifically designed with the larger screen in mind and comes with Pinterest's own homemade map, Place Pins product designer Justin Edmund and software engineer Jon Parise told CNET.
"When people are sitting on their couches, on the iPad, they're much more likely to want to move quickly, zip in and out, and pan through a full-screen map," Edmund said.
