PictureTel names top exec

The videoconferencing company names a former ANS and British Telecom executive president and CEO.

Videoconferencing company PictureTel (PCTL) today announced the appointment of Bruce R. Bond as president and chief executive officer, effective March 1.

Bond comes to PictureTel from ANS, the networking subsidiary of America Online (AOL) that recently was sold to WorldCom (WCOM) as part of AOL's restructuring (See related story). Bond served as CEO of ANS since July 1996, and before that spent seven years with British Telecom, where he ran the company's largest business division. Bond also has worked for AT&T (T) and US West (USW).

Bond succeeds Dr. Norman E. Gaut, who will continue to serve as chairman of PictureTel's board of directors. As part of his new role, Bond will join the company's board of directors, succeeding Vinod Khosla, who had agreed to remain on the board to assist the company in its search for a new CEO.

"Until now, videoconferencing has been peripheral to the corporate networking environment," Bond said. "PictureTel's goal is to be the leader in videoconferencing as it becomes integral to the new collaborative business networking environment that is beginning to emerge."
