Photonics firm gets $7 million in funding

Tunable Photonics, a Pasadena, Calif.-based fiber-optic component maker, has received $7 million in financing. Blueprint Ventures and Forrest, Binkley & Brown led the round of funding with investments of $3 million each. The United Company also contributed $1 million. A unit of SpectraSensors, which makes industrial gas sensing products, Tunable Photonics is developing products designed to "lock" tunable lasers into a specific frequency. Tunable lasers, which are capable of transmitting light in a wide range of fiber-optic wavelengths, are expected to be popular in the communications industry in the coming years for their anticipated cost savings.
