Phones 4u offers free Galaxy Gear with a Note 3 on contract

The offer only runs until Thursday, so don't dawdle if you want a free techy timepiece.

What time is it? It's deal time. Or time to start worrying about your latest accessory, if you're Samsung.

High street phone flogger Phones 4u now offers the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch free if you buy a Galaxy Note 3 on contract. Considering the accessory usually costs £300, that's quite a saving. Though it does make me wonder how well the Gear is selling.

The offer is only on until 14 November -- that's Thursday. So better be quick if you want to snap one up.

The Note 3 is free on contracts starting at £42.99 a month at Phones 4u. Or you can shell out £99.99 upfront, then £39.99 every month. Phones 4u is the only place you'll find the pink version of the Note 3, too.

For my money, there are better handsets that are much cheaper than the Note 3. And while it was very nippy, the Galaxy Gear failed to rock my world when I tried it. But if you've been eyeing up Samsung's gigant-o-phone, and quite liked the look of the Gear, now's the time to buy.

The Galaxy Gear hints at the potential of these smart watches, but it's a far from perfect device. In our review, we noted it's missing some basic features, including email and social networks. Battery life is also pretty dire, as you'll have to recharge it every day. Samsung itself has admitted the Gear lacks something special.

When it launched, the Gear only worked with the Note 3, which was a bit of a sorry state of affairs. Samsung has since made the timepiece compatible with its other handsets running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Another software update will also help it get along with the Galaxy S4 Mini, S4 Active, S4 Zoom, and Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3.

According to a leak from US retailer Best Buy, a third of all Galaxy Gears it sells are returned to the shop. This latest offer says to me the accessory isn't selling too well. I've asked Phones 4u how many Gears it's sold, and will update this story if I hear back.
