Philips makes Net connection via CD-i

The Media division of Philips Electronics will introduce an Internet-access package for its CD-i interactive media players at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in mid-May, the company told CNET today.

Philips is currently testing the Internet package in the United Kingdom and selected European countries. The package consists of a modem, a connector cable, and a compact disc containing a Mosaic-like World Wide Web browser. The Internet package will be compatible with existing CD-i players in the United States, which cost $299 and up. No pricing was available for the U.S. version of the Internet package, but officials said it could be priced at about $245.

The CD-i player connects to TVs to display video, text, and still images, as well as offering sound and interactive games.
