Philips, Intersil forge DVD alliance

Philips Electronics and electronics company Intersil announced on Thursday an alliance to jointly develop a reference design for rewritable DVD drives and recorders that will cut the time it takes to record a DVD disc in half. The reference design will allow DVD+RW drives and recorders to record discs at 4x with the potential to reach 12x speeds. Record times will be in the under 15-minute range, according to the companies.

Irvine, Calif.-based Intersil will provide the laser drivers and Philips will provide the software and encoder/decoder chips for the reference design. The design is expected to be available to manufacturers in early 2003.
