Philippe Starck's big Apple project is a Jobs family yacht
The legendary designer let slip he was working on an upcoming Apple product. Well hold your horses everyone, it's nothing we can buy
The Internet went into overdrive when renowned French designer Philippe Starck (him of the pointy kettle) he was working on a "revolutionary" new Apple product. In a radio interview with France Info, he claimed it'd be revealed soon too: "Indeed, there is a big project together which will be out in eight months," he said.
He wouldn't elaborate on what this product was, citing Apple's "religious cult of secrecy." What then could it be? The much-rumoured Apple TV set? Some new-fangled remote for it? Well no, it's a yacht for the Jobs family -- and don't expect it to pop up on the shelves of the Apple Store anytime soon.
An Apple spokesperson told AllThingsD that Starck isn't working on any Apple products. But Starck was said to be working with Jobs and Dutch ship maker Feadship to design a luxury yacht for the former Apple head honcho. According to Walter Isaacson's biography, Steve Jobs wanted to design his own yacht, and had started work on it in 2009. He enlisted the legendary French designer to help, which would explain Starck's regular trips to Cupertino to meet with Jobs' wife Laurene as the project progresses.
Starck has worked with Feadship on other yacht designs, including the Wedge Too, pictured above. Jobs' yacht is believed to be sleek and minimalist (no surprise there), with 40-foot-long glass walls. If Jobs' legacy is anything to go by, it'll be quite a looker.
Jobs was legendarily meticulous when it came to attention to detail, so expect nothing to be found wanting. This is the man who agonised over which type of washing machine best fit his family values, after all.
