The Mobile Linux Initiative was set up to address the growing number of open-source handheld devices. Gartner estimates that there will be 2.6 billion mobile phones in use worldwide by the end of 2009. The, the company said. About 44 percent of units shipped over the summer were wireless handhelds, compared to 21 percent this time last year. Traditional handhelds now make up 56 percent of PalmSource's business, the company said.
