The San Francisco Giants and Palm have installed three "beaming stations" at Pacific Bell Park to help fans more closely keep score and track the ball games. People with handhelds that use the Palm operating system can walk up to any of the three stations, hold up their handhelds and receive a "beam" of a score-keeping application and other information such as statistics, rosters, lineups, pitching matchups and player biographies.
The beaming stations, developed by San Francisco-based WideRay, contain three small servers that deliver broadband, customized information to handhelds via high-speed infrared beams. The stations work with all Palm-based devices, including those from Palm, Handspring, Sony, IBM, Kyocera and Symbol. Similar beaming stations have begun to sprout up at business trade shows and other large events.
