Overwatch celebrates 20 million players with Halloween tricks and treats
A whole bundle of Halloween-themed cosmetic items and new a game mode are out in time to celebrate Overwatch passing another big milestone.
Much like how Overwatch held a "Summer Games" celebration during the 2016 Olympics which offered new skins, sprays and other unlockable cosmetic items, Halloween is just around the corner and Blizzard has dropped another seasonal event on us.
The Halloween Terror update, which adds creepy costumes, sprays, map decorations and highlight intros, is live now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and will run until November 1. You can check out all the new items here. The event also packs in a new limited-time-only game mode called Junkenstein's Revenge, pitting a team of players against waves of robots. In a first for Overwatch brawls, it's players working cooperatively against AI, rather than exploding each other.
Blizzard has also rectified one of the more unpopular aspects of its Summer Games event by making the new Halloween items available for purchase with in-game currency. So no buying dozens of loot boxes on the last day and praying. Yes, I absolutely did this during Summer Games.
The team-based shooter also hit an impressive 20 million players, double the number it stood at in June. For comparison, Blizzard's incredibly popular MMO World of Warcraft reached around 12 million at its peak.
