Oracle, Symantec team on Web package
The companies will bundle Symantec's Web authoring program with Oracle's Application Server 4.0 to deliver an enterprise Web package.
The companies will bundle Symantec's Web authoring program, Visual Page, with Oracle's Application Server 4.0, currently in beta. The package will enable business customers to create and deploy Web-based applications that are scalable and relatively easy to maintain, the companies said.
Under the terms of the agreement, Oracle may include a copy of Symantec Visual Page with every Oracle Application Server 4.0 Developer Kit license. The Redwood Shores, California-based company anticipates making the bundle available to customers during the first quarter of 1998. The company also said its customers can order additional Visual Page licenses through Symantec.
Oracle's Application Server 4.0 is a software platform for deploying business thin-client applications. Symantec's Visual Page is an HTML editor that allows users to move documents and other business information to the Web by using drag-and-drop controls and creation and resizing of tables, frames, and images.
Oracle executives said they expect the Symantec package will help customers expedite application deployment and modification with an environment based on scalable and secure deployment capabilities of the Oracle server. "Rapid application creation is a key requirement for the deployment of Web-based applications," said Peter Relan, vice president of the Application Server Products Division at Oracle.
The announcement comes a month after Oracle previewed its Web Application Server 4.0, a 100 percent Java-compatible version of the company's Web server and object request broker combo. This month, Oracle also began rolling out Oracle Applications 10.7 Web-deployable format so corporate customers can access the applications through Web browsers.
