Oracle filed a response to a federal antitrust regulators' lawsuit to block its hostile takeover bid for PeopleSoft. The software maker contends in the response, filed late on Thursday, that the merger would not be anticompetitive, as large customers have access to a sizable pool of vendors of human resources and financial business applications.

The U.S. Department of Justice, in its antitrust lawsuit, says the merger would reduce competition for enterprise customers from three players--SAP, PeopleSoft and Oracle--to two.
