Opera updates browser for Symbian

New browser has better support than previous versions for JavaScript and the Document Object Model, Opera says.

Opera Software, based in Oslo, Norway, released Version 8 of its browser for the Symbian S60 mobile phone operating system. The new version, available for download, replaces Opera 6.2, whose users get a free upgrade.

Opera said the new browser, which uses the same browsing engine as Opera's desktop browser, has better support than previous versions for the JavaScript scripting language and the Document Object Model, a World Wide Web Consortium recommendation for letting scripts act on discrete parts of a Web document. Opera also said it had given its own technology for displaying standard HTML pages in small cell phone windows, called Small-Screen Rendering, a "major upgrade," giving users the option to favor quality or speed in downloading pages.
