Safeway is expanding its online grocery presence in California, with the launch of Vons.com to serve the San Diego area. Vons is using technology from GroceryWorks.com, an Internet-based home shopping and delivery service, jointly owned by Safeway and British food retailer Tesco.

GroceryWorks operates Safeway.com in San Francisco, Sacramento, Calif., Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash. Vons.com will begin deliveries as soon as Monday and will charge $9.95 per delivery, although the company is running a limited time promotion offering $5 off.
