Australian broadband phone company engin is offering patrons of selected pubs free phone calls to any landline in Ireland this St. Patrick's day.

Using engin's Voice Box, a device that can make phone calls over a broadband Internet connection, customers celebrating in the following four pubs tomorrow will be able to use the company's telecommunications service to call friends and family overseas for free:

  • Brisbane: PJ O'Briens, 127 Charlotte St
  • Gold Coast: Anglers Arms Hotel, 50 Queen St, Southport
  • Sydney: The Orient, 89 George Street , The Rocks
  • Melbourne: The Irish Times, 427 Little Collins Street

In an attempt to demonstrate the quality of the relatively new consumer technology, engin Voice Boxes will utilise Chilli Internet Solutions' iBurst service, high-speed wireless broadband Internet connections, at the ISP's fastest speeds of 1Mbps downstream and 345kbps upstream.

"Instead of racking up expensive bills, we can demonstrate how people can make massive savings on their phone bills," explains engin Chief Executive Officer, Ilkka Tales.

According to engin, by using a home broadband connection combined with the VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) service to make calls, consumers can save up to 40 per cent compared to a traditional fixed line service.

Patrons who sign up to the service before the end of March, can get $20 worth of international call credits for the first 3 months by quoting a promotional code from fliers distributed at the pubs.

"With rates as low as five cents per minute to Ireland, a one hour call costs less than the price of a pint of Guinness!" added Tales.

Existing engin customers will also be offered free phone calls to landlines in Ireland from midnight through to midnight on St. Patrick's Day. However, those looking to cash in on the pub offer might have to battle a drunken crowd to make a call -- only one engin Voice Box will be in each of the four pubs, available from midday to 8 p.m.
