Odds and Ends: Symantec updates, redux; Adobe Illustrator; Suitcase/WindowShade; Knowledge Base Updates
Symantec updates, redux Yesterday we covered a press release from Symantec announcing that updates to a number of their products, including Norton AntiVirus 9, will be available via LiveUpdate on Dec. 22. Reader Larry McGlade points out that one of the problems with Norton AntiVirus under Panther is that LiveUpdate doesn't work -- raising the question of how users are supposed to get the update.
UPDATE Several readers have informed us that LiveUpdate does work manually under Panther; it simply doesn't automatically update software.
We noted Symantec's online form for requesting update CDs, mentioned in the press release. However, that page appears to be for users requesting replacement CDs for their current versions. It also requires users to provide a credit card to pay a $10.00 CD fee plus $9.95 shipping and handling fee. Finally, the page states that downloaded versions of Symantec software are not eligible.
We hope to find out more information about whether or not this page is truly applicable for users who need updates for Panther compatibility.
Adobe Illustrator font preview problem MacFixIt reader Tony Aguila reports a problem he's been having with Illustrator CS (on a dual-1GHz running OS X 10.3.1):
"When I turn off font preview (Type & Auto Tracing preference) it will work fine for that session, but after you quit the program it will crash on the next launch. The splash screen will show up but then nothing after it, and the dialog box offering to report the crash will come up."
