OS X 10.2.x Find bug In the past few days we've received a couple of reports of a bug with the Finder's Find command in OS X 10.2.8. Both reports indicate that if you search for files using the terms "Visibility Off" and "Date Modified is today," eventually the Finder will hang -- presenting a perpetual "spinning beach ball" and forcing you to restart.

Although this bug hasn't been acknowledged by Apple, we have experienced it ourselves, and not just with OS X 10.2.8; we've seen it as far back as 10.2.3, and it could have existed prior to that. We've tried it on three of our Macs, and all exhibit the problem.

Timbuktu and OS X 10.3 (Panther): follow-up We previously covered information a reader received from Netopia support, stating that a "Panther version" of their Timbuktu Pro remote connection/control software would not be available until December, 2003. However, we also mentioned that readers have reported some degree of success running Timbuktu Pro under current builds of Panther.

We've since received a message from Tim Williams, product manager at Netopia, stating that although the current version of Timbuktu Pro, 6.0.3, isn't officially certified for Panther, preliminary testing indicates that it generally functions. However, it has a few issues with login/logout and does not support Fast User Switching. Another email from Netopia support indicates minor cosmetic issues. This confirms the reader feedback we have received. Mr. Williams also confirmed that a new version, fully compatible with Panther and with a number of new features, should be ready by mid-December.

Finale for OS X delayed Coda Music had previously announced that the long-awaited Mac OS X version of Finale, the music notation software, would be released on October 20, 2003. However, MacFixIt reader Tim McElearney forwarded a message from Coda stating that Finale 2004 for Macintosh OS X is now scheduled to ship "no earlier than December 15, 2003."

Power Mac G5 noise can be due to bad power supply We had previously covered various noise issues with the new Power Mac G5 models. MacFixIt reader Damion Michaels reported similar problems that were finally traced to a faulty power supply. It took a bit of back and forth before he could convince Apple to replace the power supply; however, his G5 now provides "pure silence."

Apple "UFO" power adapter repair Over the past few years, many PowerBook and iBook users with the "UFO" AC adapter -- the silver, saucer-shaped model -- have reported problems with loose or frayed wiring. An individual (not affiliated with MacFixIt) has posted a Web page with information about fixing the adapter. Note that this procedure will definitely void any warranty you might have on the adapter.
