The Oculus Rift marketplace is now open for business as a sharing portal for developers to showcase their work and play-test the work of others ahead of the consumer launch of the virtual-reality (VR) gaming headset.

At the moment, the Rift is only in the hands of developers, so consumers cannot yet purchase games, but the full marketplace experience is coming soon, Oculus VR said in a blog post. "While it's simply a sharing service today, over the coming months, we'll work toward making Share an incredible marketplace for Oculus-ready games, experiences and applications."

While this means that the Rift is some months away for consumers, we can at least get a feel for what the developers have been working on. Developers, on the other hand, can play-test and rate games on quality and comfort level, and provide constructive feedback to their fellow developers.

Developers will self-publish their games to the marketplace, but there will be an approval process to ensure that content isn't offensive or malicious, which means there will be a small wait for your game to appear on the site. This early opening is also providing Oculus VR with an opportunity to streamline this process and make sure that all checks and balances for uploaded content are in place. Overall, however, Share is designed to be community driven.

We're particularly looking forward to Alone in the Rift, a first-person horror game that looks absolutely terrifying, and Trial of the Rift Drifter, a spooky-looking retro-horror that takes place in alternative dimensions.
