NY fire department picks BlackBerrys

The New York City Fire Department, Research In Motion and Consilient Technologies announced Tuesday an initial introduction of BlackBerry devices to the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the Chief of Department and the Chief of Operations in New York City. Phase two of the introduction will involve a broader distribution to administrative workers at the FDNY headquarters.

Consilient's Mail extension (MX) software allows the devices, which let subscribers send and receive e-mail, to access FDNY's Novell GroupWise e-mail system. The devices and software have already been used in a two-month pilot program.
