Nokia is not just going head-to-head with Apple's iPad, but its new owner's Surface 2, with the 10.1-inch Lumia 2520. But it may be that Nokia's hardware quality and style, plus its great range of in-house software, is the best chance yet for Windows RT 8.1 to take root.

The Nokia Lumia 2520 features a 1080p 10.1-inch display and includes 4G long-term evolution (LTE) connectivity on-board. Add a 6.7-megapixel camera and a price tag of just US$499 and this is one impressive entrant to the tablet scene.

The Lumia 2520 also includes a fast charge feature that delivers up to 80 per cent charge in just one hour. If that is not enough, Nokia has also developed the Nokia Power Keyboard accessory, which adds five hours of extra battery life along with two USB ports. The keyboard is also a wrap-around case when not in use.

The Nokia Power Keyboard is priced at US$150.

What may be Nokia's biggest drawcard is its software. Nokia's HERE Maps give deep offline mapping, and Nokia Music offers free music streaming. Special editions of the wider Nokia family of apps for photos, videos and more give a deeper sense of quality than Windows RT has ever seen before.

The Lumia 2520 will be available soon in the US, UK and Finland, with additional countries "to follow shortly".

Official word from Nokia Australia representatives is that it is too early to share details on local availability and pricing, and they will update us soon.
