No more Assassin's Creed games for PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360
Ubisoft CEO says, "We will not have old-gen versions" of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Rainbow Six: Siege or The Division."
With the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One market continuing to grow, Ubisoft announced on Tuesday that it plans to release some -- but not all -- of its major franchises exclusively for the new consoles.
While Ubisoft will continue to ship Just Dance games on older consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, you shouldn't expect the company's other major series to come to those systems.
"On Just Dance, we will continue to bring old-gen console versions," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said during an earnings briefing this afternoon. "But on the other products like Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, The Division, and the unannounced franchise, we will not have old-gen versions."
Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Rainbow Six: Siege are scheduled to launch later this year for PS4 and Xbox One, while The Division is slated to arrive in early 2016 for those platforms as well. Ubisoft's unannounced game -- which Guillemot interestingly referred to as a "franchise" -- is due to launch before April 2016.
Syndicate, Siege, and The Division are also coming to PC. Ubisoft has not said if it is bringing any of those games to Wii U.
Last year, Ubisoft released Assassin's Creed Unity for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, while another game -- Assassin's Creed Rogue -- shipped for Xbox 360 and PS3 before later launching on PC.
Why would Ubisoft move away from Xbox 360 and PS3? The chart below sums it up well. For the company's most recent fiscal year ended March 31, PS4/Xbox One made up 52 percent of all sales, a massive swing from the year prior when those platforms made up just 15 percent of total sales.
