Proving that there ain't no party like an S Club party, Nikon has come out all cameras blazing with a range of new Coolpix S-series compacts following the souped-up P6000. The S610 and S610c, S710 and S560 will hurl their shiny metal bodies on to the consumer electronics dancefloor over the two next months.
They come in a range of colours and specifications. First up is the 10-megapixel Coolpix S610. It boasts a 4x zoom and 76mm (3-inch) screen, with lens-shifting image stabilisation.
Nikon has added a new automatic scene selector, which checks out conditions and selects the appropriate scene mode. You also get an active child mode, which automatically keeps moving subjects in sharp focus. And there's that smile mode nonsense, but the less said about that the better, in our opinion.
The Coolpix S610 will be available straight after the Bank Holiday on 29 August for somewhere in the region of £250. Don't stop movin' through the photos to reach the other snappers in this latest tranche -- high-powered or mini-sized, long zooms and even a ginormo touchscreen. -Rich Trenholm
The Coolpix S610c will follow the S610 in September, and will be similarly priced around £250.
The Nikon Coolpix S710 is a top-whack compact, boasting a humungous 14.5 effective megapixels. Nikon claims 12 frames per second shooting, but if that's at full resolution we'll eat our... hang on, we're not making any promises, just in case. We'll know more when we get the camera in for full, in-depth, no button-left-unpushed review.
You also get a 3.6x optical zoom with 28mm wide-angle lens, with the full line-up of shutter and aperture priority, program and manual modes. And there's more...
A 76mm (3-inch) screen completes the spec, alongside one of those spinny clickwheels we love so much. The Coolpix S710 will cost around £300 from 12 September.
Finally, we have Nikon's contender for the world's wee-est, the Coolpix S560. It features a 5x zoom lens, a large 69mm (2.7-inch) screen and such gubbins as smile mode.
The Coolpix S560 will be available from 29 August for £180.
Finally, for all you touchy-feely types, Nikon invites you to get your grubby fingerprints all over the Coolpix S60, a curvy 10-megapixel snapper. There's a 5x optical zoom in the mix, automatic scene selector, time-lapse movies, 12-person face recognition and HDMI output. And the fingerprints?
The fingerprints will stick to this chuffin' ma-hu-sive 89mm (3.5-inch) enormoscreen, boasting touch-panel control. Blimey!
The Coolpix S60 will be available from mid-September for around £300.
