Nextel Communications on Monday named William Kennard, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, to its board of directors.
Kennard recently joined Washington, D.C.-based Carlyle Group, one of the world's largest private equity companies. He serves as Carlyle's managing director of global telecommunications and media investing strategy.
Kennard left the FCC in January after heading the organization since late 1997. He is currently a board member at Handspring, the maker of personal digital assistants.
