NeXT refocuses on Web with name change

NeXT Computer is changing its name to NeXT Software Inc. as company founder Steve Jobs moves to focus on WebObjects, NeXT's Web development toolkit.

The next step for Steve Jobs's NeXT is a name change and a refocusing of the company's efforts on Web development, company officials said today. The company is changing its name to NeXT Software Inc. and will now include a Web-specific software group.

In addition, the company will form a new division called Web Constructors to support customers building Web sites.

NeXT's WebObjects software will support Sun Microsystems' Java programming.

The WebObjects suite comprises the basic toolkit as well as a professional and enterprise version. The single-user version is free.
