News.com wins national journalism award
CNET News.com is named a winner in the eighth annual "Best in Business" awards sponsored by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.
News.com won in the real-time breaking news category for its special coverage "Microsoft's reprieve," focusing on the June 2001 court ruling that vacated an order calling for the breakup of the software giant but also determined that the company illegally maintained its monopoly in operating systems.
"This was a remarkable set of stories, better in some ways than reports in major newspapers the next morning," the judges wrote. "In addition to the main news, CNET produced a strong sidebar on Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, an analysis of Microsoft's future products and strategy, and broad industry reaction."
Other contest winners included The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Newsday, USA Today and Bloomberg News. The Journal received a special award for "Extraordinary Achievement" for its coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
A record 568 entries were received in the association's contest, which recognized the best overall publications and best breaking news and spot enterprise reporting in business journalism during 2001.
Formed in 1964 to promote superior coverage of business and economic events and issues, it is the only educational business journalism association for editors and writers.
