NEWS.COM wins industry awards

CNET NEWS.COM sweeps all four categories it entered at the Annual Computer Press Awards this year, including best overall site.

NEW YORK--NEWS.COM swept all four categories it entered at the Annual Computer Press Awards this year, including best overall site.

At a Manhattan ceremony held by the Computer Press Association last night, NEWS.COM won first-place awards for the best online news story ("The CDA: Case closed"), best online feature ("New world order: One year after the Telecom Act"), and best individual audio segment ("CNET Radio News").

In the news story category, NEWS.COM also took second and third place ("Pentium bug surfaces" and "Stunning shakeup at Apple").

"What CNET and its various sites have done is really remarkable," said CPA president Michael Desmond. "Our judges looked very hard at all the online categories, but CNET consistently produced top content that took greatest advantage of the online medium. I credit CNET's exclusive focus on online publishing, which allows them to focus the ample talent they have on staff."

CNET, which publishes NEWS.COM, won three other first-place trophies: CNET Central took top awards for best overall television show and best television segment. The New Edge was also a runner-up in the overall TV category.

CNET's BUILDER.COM won first place among online how-to features, and GAMECENTER.COM took first place in the online review category.

The awards, which were judged in conjunction with Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, spanned 20 categories. In the print section, Newsweek magazine won for best news story and Business Week for best individual feature. PC Magazine was named best computing magazine.

NEWS.COM has won several other awards since its launch in September 1996. This year alone, the online news organization was named best news site in the 1998 Webby Awards, best non-newspaper online news service by newspaper industry magazine Editor & Publisher for the second year in a row, and best online business site at the international Milia d'Or Awards in Cannes, France, which recognize interactive media achievements.
