SAN FRANCISCO--A CNET News.com special report on major alliances shaping the Internet's future won a first-place award last night in an annual competition of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The exhaustive multimedia report, titled "The new world order," examined how AT&T and Microsoft have formed a powerful axis that could revolutionize communications, computing, and media. It was named best online feature story.

The award, presented by the Northern California chapter of the journalists organization, is the latest of many garnered by News.com since its launch in 1996. Earlier this year, News.com won "an unprecedented third straight EPpy Award in the category of Best Non-Newspaper Online News Service," according to Editor & Publisher. The site also received a first-place feature award from the Computer Press Association for a report titled "When worlds collide."

News.com last year won the first Webby Award ever given for a news site, besting the online edition of the New York Times and ABCNews.com, among others.
