On Friday, the Society of Professional Journalists awarded its Sigma Delta Chi prize for deadline reporting (independent) to News.com for its coverage of Excite@Home. The story, "Excite@Home winds down," written by Dawn Kawamoto, John Borland and Rachel Konrad, marked the final chapter for computer networking giant Excite.

News.com has garnered a series of editorial awards this year, including the following:

• The Western Publications Association recognized News.com at the 52nd annual "Maggie" magazine awards with three first-place honors: best online news story, for "A Mortal Microsoft;" best online article, for "Cracking the Nest Egg," on online banking; and best online interview or profile, for "The Peacemaker," on AOL Time Warner's Richard Parsons. CNET.com also won honors for the best regularly featured online column, for .

"A Mortal Microsoft" also was a finalist for the Gerald Loeb Award, given out by the Anderson School at the University of California at Los Angeles to honor writers who make significant contributions to the understanding of business, finance and the economy.

• The American Society of Magazine Editors nominated News.com as a finalist for the National Magazine Award in the "General Excellence Online" category, which recognizes outstanding magazine Internet sites.

• News.com reporters won three awards from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the largest association of journalists in North America, which is dedicated to promoting superior coverage of business and economic events and issues.

• News.com reporters Richard Shim and Jim Hu were named to the NewsBios "30 Under 30" list, which honors young journalists making an impact in the nation's business news profession. The list also includes reporters from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Fortune and The Washington Post.
