Chipmakers Atheros Communications and Qualcomm announced on Friday that they are collaborating to develop fast, low-power chipsets supporting cellular and Wi-Fi technologies that will work in mobile phones and other types of handsets. The new devices will support cellular technologies CDMA and WCDMA, in addition to Wi-Fi standards 802.11g or 802.11a/g.

Demand for combined cellular and Wi-Fi handsets has increased, as more mobile phones start to deliver voice, voice over Internet Protocol, data, music and even television. Atheros and Qualcomm are demonstrating their first integrated solution at the 3GSM Conference in Barcelona next week. The combined Atheros/Qualcomm solution will be commercially available to mobile-device makers by June 2006, the companies said.
