America Online (AOL) today announced the appointment of a publishing veteran as president and chief executive of its Digital City project.

Paul DeBenedictis, 45, will fill the newly created position, coming from a stint as new media president for Hachette Filipacchi magazines, a publisher of consumer magazines.

Digital City, launched last year, operates in seven metropolitan markets and provides local interactive services ranging from regional news to traffic conditions.

"Paul brings extensive experience in new media with an impressive background in product development, advertising sales, finance, and general management," said David Cole, Digital City chairman.

Under his tenure, Hachette Filipacchi's new media division generated revenues of $5 million and posted profits of $1 million since its creation in 1993.
