Network firm turns pro
Nysernet, which built a well-known private Internet network a decade ago, next week plans to announce a new affiliate that will cater to businesses in need of Internet strategies.
The company has 11 years of Internet experience in the nonprofit sector and now wants a chunk of the profits that are expected to pour in from the growing business and intranet market.
Nysernet, a nonprofit organization, was funded by the National Science Foundation and its customers, including <="" a="" rel="noopener nofollow" class="c-regularLink" target="_blank">Columbia University and Eastman Kodak.
Called AppliedTheory Communications, the for-profit company will provide services including Web management, intranets, applications, and Internet training to medium- and large-sized companies.
AppliedAccess will lease line connections ranging from 56 kbps to 155 mbps and provide turnkey services including delivery, installation, testing, and support; Applied Web Management will offer Web site services including planning, design, programming, and content; AppliedIntraneting will develop intranets and end-to-end systems; and Applied Knowledge Services will provide standard, tailored, and custom training programs for technical and business users.
The company's management and intranet services are built on the AppliedAccess network backbone, a multiple T3 network, with 180 mbps access to the Net. AppliedTheory's network is integrated into Sprint's OC-3 (155 mbps) SprintLink network.
The services are expected to be available Tuesday and will vary in price depending on the size and needs of its business clients.
