Netflix snags Activision Blizzard's first TV show, 'Skylanders Academy'

Based on the toys-to-life video game franchise, the show will debut on the steaming service in the fall.

Activision Blizzard Studio's first television show, "Skylanders Academy," will premiere on Netflix in the fall, the newly created studio said Thursday.

The show is based on the toys-to-life video game franchise, which has sold more than 250 million toys since creating the toys-to-life category in 2011. The series follows the adventures of the Skylanders team, a group of heroes with unique skills who protect the Skylands universe from evil-doers.

It's the first production the from new film and TV production studio created last year by Activision Blizzard, the company behind hits such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. Also in the works is a series of feature films based on Call of Duty, a franchise that has sold more than 175 million games.

Activision's new studio underscores the video game industry's story-telling prowess and growing influence, as well as its ambition to expand the appeal of its video game titles beyond gameplay consoles and mobile devices. The "portal of power" technology used in the Skylanders game series has helped the company ring up more than $3 billion in sales of Skylanders figurines.
