Netflix orders up 'Punisher' series, more pain and vengeance

Marvel's Punisher is rising from guest-star status and taking a lead role in his own Netflix series.

Actor Jon Bernthal's tortured vision for Marvel's Punisher anti-hero captured a lot of audience love in the second season of "Daredevil" on Netflix. Soon he will get top billing in a streaming series of his very own as Netflix announced Friday it is creating "Marvel's The Punisher" as a standalone show.

Entertainment Weekly first reported the news. Netflix confirmed the move on its Facebook page with this message: "Target acquired. Marvel's The Punisher returns to Netflix." The post included a teaser that ends with Punisher saying, "Pain time." We already know to expect a fair amount of pain infliction in the upcoming series.

"The Punisher" will join a long list of Marvel-related Netflix shows, including "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones" and the upcoming "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage." As with Punisher, Luke Cage started out as a guest star on "Jessica Jones," but his standalone series will debut this fall. Netflix has not announced a release date for "The Punisher."
