Netcom PoP restored in Bay Area

Some Netcom users in the San Francisco Bay Area experience problems connecting to the Internet in the past 24 hours, but the problem has been fixed.

Some Netcom (NETC) users in the San Francisco Bay Area experienced problems connecting to the Internet in the past 24 hours, but the problem has been fixed, a company vice president said today.

Netcom could not say how many users were affected, but the Internet provider serves 5,000 people in the area that was hit by the outage. Netcom's total subscriber base numbers 550,000.

The problem was caused when power went out last night at the company's network PoP (point of presence) in South San Francisco, California, Netcom vice president of operations Craig Clemens said. Once electricity was restored, some equipment at the local dial-in network was knocked offline.

The problem, which Clemens said was fixed by 2:45 p.m. today, affected only customers attempting to dial into the San Francisco PoP.
