NCR server targets branch offices
NCR adds a Pentium Pro machine to its S10 server family to target branch offices of financial services companies and retail stores.
The NCR S16 comes with either a 180-MHz or 200-MHz Pentium Pro processor and will be marketed as a server for transaction processing at stores and branch offices. The S16 can also be used as a server to tie separate LANs together or as a high-performance Intranet server, the company said.
The S16 server will initially be bundled with Windows NT Server 4.0. Support for NCR's version of Unix will be added in the second quarter. The S16 can also run IBM OS/2, SCO UnixWare, or Novell NetWare.
The S16 is now available for $4,000 to $7,900. A typical low-end configuration includes a 180-MHz processor, 32MB of memory, and a 2GB ultrawide SCSI hard disk drive. A high-end configuration includes a 200-MHz processor, 128MB of memory, and an 8GB ultrawide SCSI drive. The server also comes with a CD-ROM drive.
