The Nando Times, one of the oldest publications on the Web, is planning to ask visitors to register their personal data for the first time beginning Aug. 26, according to a notice on the Web site. "It will cost nothing, take only a moment to complete, and we'll never share your personal information with any advertiser or other company," the site reads.

The Web site, an aggregator of news and information, joins other Net publishers, including Washingtonpost.com, in gathering data about their audiences to better sell advertisements. By personalizing readers' Web pages, publishers can also deliver targeted ads to their interests. Many of the moves are seen as a first step before publishers begin charging readers monthly or annual subscriptions.
