Move over, Angelina, Alicia Vikander is Hollywood's new Lara Croft
The Swedish actress received great praise last year for her efforts in "The Danish Girl" and "Ex Machina." Now, she tackles the task of being the Tomb Raider.
Lara Croft has made a comeback on the video game front in recent years, and now she's a step closer to hitting the silver screen once again.
On Thursday, it was revealed that Swedish actress Alicia Vikander will be playing the iconic heroine in Tomb Raider's upcoming film reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film doesn't yet have a release date, but is known to be an origin story that follows a younger Lara.
Though not (yet) a household name, Vikander has an impressive resume. Last year she received critical acclaim for her performances in films "The Danish Girl" and "Ex Machina." She'll soon be seen across Matt Damon in "Jason Bourne."
Vikander will be following Angelina Jolie, who previously played Lara in 2001's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" and the 2003 sequel, "The Cradle of Life." Jolie's star appeal wasn't quite enough to blast the film franchise into the stratosphere though, as both projects received a lukewarm reception from critics. They were moderate box office successes, however.
The new film hopes to build on the momentum built by Crystal Dynamics, who developed 2013's "Tomb Raider" and 2015's "Rise of the Tomb Raider" video games, which received rave reviews and revitalized the dormant franchise.
