Motorola (MOT) is announcing technologies that promise to bring more corporate voices to the Internet.

The company plans to license and sell software from VocalTec (VOCLF) that links corporate telephone systems to the Internet, providing a cheap alternative to long distance phone service.

VocalTec was one of the day's most active movers on NASDAQ, jumping 34.6 percent in trading today. The company closed at 8-3/4 a share, up 2-1/4 from yesterday.

The Internet Gateway server software, which VocalTec first launched last fall, routes international phone calls and faxes through the Net instead of through long distance carriers. However, the quality of domestic phone call transmission is not quite as good as services offered by standard telephone carriers.

The two companies gave no time frame for debut of the software.

Separately, Motorola today announced TrueStream video and audio software that allows users to view and listen to clips as they are being downloaded. The software promises no significant loss in quality despite bandwidth or network restrictions, the company said.

Motorola said it has developed the software as part of efforts to become a player in emerging Internet multimedia products.

TrueStream is three-fold, made up of the TrueStream Player, a plug-in for Netscape and Microsoft browsers; Server, which runs on Windows NT and Windows 95, Sun Microsystems' Solaris, and Linux operating systems; and the Producer plug-in for Adobe's Premiere video editing software.

TrueStream offers video and audio encoding, sound-image synchronization capability, image correction and technology to prevent audio loss. The company said the software ensures fidelity of sound and images even "under adverse network conditions" at baud rates as low as 28.8 kbps.

Motorola has made software evaluation kits available today, free on the company's Web site. It will be commercially available at month's end.

The TrueStream Player and Producer plug-ins are free. The Server is priced from $495 for 25 users, up to $5,995 for unlimited users.
