More Security Update 2004-02-23 problems

CNET staff

Yesterday we detailed some startup issues - characterized by a stall at the gray Apple screen or a blank/black screen - after applying Apple's 2004-02-23 Security Update. We've now received reports a an additional minor issue and a potential workaround.

Missing custom icons MacFixIt reader David Rodgerson writes "After the most recent security update, all the custom user icons in my user menu have disappeared in favor of the blue generic ones. The user accounts themselves seem unaffected and work fine."

Disconnecting devices Some users have reported that temporarily removing all external devices (USB, FireWire, etc.) and non-native RAM modules allows a proper startup in cases where installation of Security Update 2004-02-23 results in a stalled blank/black screen.

Bruce Jividen writes "I tried various things (repairing the disk with my Panther install disk, resetting the PRAM, etc.) to no avail. Finally I unplugged all USB/Firewire Devices and removed the additional RAM from my system. That got it going again. I did the fix-permissions thing, shut down, and put everything back in. This time it started up with no problems."
