More on Google creating its own global network

The Times Online has an article about Google creating its own global Internet Protocol network--not the first time this has been reported.

Citing unidentified sources, the report notes that Google has been looking to hire people who can negotiate dark-fiber contracts and purchase telecommunications interconnection facilities in New York. It reportedly is buying shipping containers to create mobile data centers and is also rumored to be planning a PC, the "," that would offer interactive content from a variety of sources.

"A leading content provider, who did not wish to be named, told Times Online, 'We are in discussions with Google to provide content for their alternative Internet service, to be distributed through their Google Cube product,'" the article said. "However, industry insiders fear that the development of a network of Google Cubes, powered over a Google-owned Internet network, will greatly increase the power that Google wields over online publishers and Internet users."

Google has declined to confirm or deny such reports in the past and did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment on this article.
