Microsoft buys NetCarta

Microsoft has acquired NetCarta, a maker of Web site management tools, for $20 million.

Microsoft (MSFT) said today that it has agreed to acquire Web software maker NetCarta from parent company CMG Information Services (CMGI).

CMG, which provides online services for direct marketing campaigns, said it will receive $20 million in the deal. Microsoft has also agreed to purchase a 4.9 percent stake in CMG and "explore other business opportunities within CMG's portfolio of Internet-related ventures," according to the company.

Microsoft will integrate NetCarta's WebMapper tool for authoring, monitoring, updating Web sites into several of its development and Internet-related software suites, the company said. WebMapper includes tools for managing the content and structure of Web applications that reside on several servers at once. The tool also gives Webmasters an administration tool for analyzing and reporting on site traffic.

WebMapper will be integrated with the Microsoft BackOffice, FrontPage, and Visual InterDev packages. The site administration software will also be used with Microsoft's Internet Information Server 3.0 and its Content Replication System.

As part of the deal, Rory Stark, a NetCarta founder and chief technical officer, will go to work for the server applications division of Microsoft's Internet services unit.
