Micron Electronics
announced price cuts on its consumer and corporate lines of desktop PCs, the Boise, Idaho, manufacturer's second round of discounts this week.
The price cuts apply to pre-configured systems in the Millenia line, Micron's high-end consumer PCs, and the ClientPro family of corporate PCs. Most models affected were discounted by about 10 percent.
The deepest price cut hits the Micron ClientPro VXE, reduced over 30 percent from $1,299 to $899. The ClientPro VXE comes network-ready with a 166-MHz Pentium MMX processo, 32MB of memory, and a 1.2GB hard drive.
Today's discount on the ClientPro gives Micron a corporate PC in the sub-$1,000 range for the first time, according to Micron. Consumer PCs dominated the sub-$1,000 market in 1997, but business systems are increasingly breaking the low-cost benchmark.
Meanwhile, the higher-end Micron Millenia XKU 266 with a 266-MHz Pentium II processor was reduced to $2,199 from $2,348, a discount of 9 percent.
Earlier this week, Micron slashed prices by up to $1,000 on notebook computers, dropping the cost of an entry-level machine to $1,799. $2,000 is shaping up to be 1998's low-cost price point for portables.
The discounted computers are available through Micron's ComputersNow program, which offers same-day shipment on pre-configured systems.
