Mediator had antitrust key years ago

A reader points out that there were better settlement deals on the table early on in the Microsoft antitrust trial--but states wouldn't sign on.

In response to the Nov. 1 Perspectives column by Charles Cooper, "Machiavelli meets Microsoft ":

You are absolutely correct except for one thing. Judge Richard Posner (mediator for the Microsoft antitrust case) actually had a better settlement offer from Microsoft three years ago but state attorneys general scuttled it.

It is also worth noting that the New Mexico attorney general understood the politics of the matter better than the rest--and got out long ago!
