May dubbed "Net Sweeps Month"

The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and Internet market researcher Nielsen/NetRatings have dubbed May "Net Sweeps Month," the cyber-equivalent of the long-standing rating method for television. During the month, the organizations will choose qualifying Web sites for three new awards: rising star, top U.S. property and top global property. The awards, based on Nielsen's audience measurement rankings, will be given during the sixth-annual Webby Awards, sponsored by the Academy and to be held in San Francisco in June. "The Internet Sweeps Month is the first of its kind for the Web, measuring the best and brightest the Internet has to offer," Maya Draisin, executive director of the Academy, said in a statement. "It's a great way to learn and discover what drives traffic online." The Webby Awards are typically determined by qualitative means through the academy's more than 350 members.
