Maple Optical snags $40 million
Optical-equipment maker Maple Optical Systems has just completed a $40 million third round of funding led by Leapfrog Ventures, Charter Venture Capital and Firsthand Capital, according to a source close to the company. Investors from previous rounds, such as Amerindo Investment Advisors, Aurora Technology Funds, McQuillan Ventures, Raza Foundries, Siemens Venture Capital and Texas Pacific Group, also contributed. The company is looking for an additional $10 million investment from a single partner or multiple strategic partners, which would be included in the third round. Maple has raised more than $100 million to date. In October 2000, the company closed a $50 million second round led by Texas Pacific along with Amerindo, Aurora, Siemens, McQuillan, Raza and Technology Crossover Ventures. Raza also anted up $9 million for Maple's first round. San Jose, Calif.-based Maple makes optical equipment for telecom carriers' metropolitan networks, which operate within a city, as opposed to long-haul networks, which carry data between cities. The equipment both transmits and routes data using more than one network protocol, which can give a carrier more flexibility.
