"New era, same spirit. The season starts here. Let's do this. #mufc" With those words, Manchester United has joined Twitter.
It might be later coming to Twitter than a Paul Scholes challenge, but @ManUtd already has 140,000 followers and counting.
The account promises "iconic artwork, behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive content" from the Premier League champions. Since that first tweet this morning, missives from Old Trafford include pictures of red-shirted legends Best, Charlton and Law; a snap of team captain Rio Ferdinand celebrating with the Premier League trophy; and a stern-faced image of new manager David Moyes, who replacedthis summer.
Foreign-language versions of the Man Utd Twitter feed will soon join the English language account. And to reach more fans overseas, the Red Devils have also launched a page on Sina Weibo, the vast Chinese social network that has over 500 million registered users.
Manchester United are back in action on 11 August when they take on FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic at Wembley in the FA Community Shield, before travelling to Swansea when the season kicks off again on 17 August.
