MacHome posts receipt files for users

Last week we covered a MacHome magazine article recommending that users delete the contents of /Library/Receipts to free up hard drive space -- following this recommendation prevents Disk Utility from being able to use the Repair Disk Permissions function. (It could also have consequences for updating software.)

For those users who had already followed the recommendation, MacHome has posted "replacements" for essential receipt files for each version of Mac OS X from 10.2.0 to 10.3.2. Downloading the appropriate receipt files for your version of Mac OS X and then copying them to /Library/Receipts will allow you to run Repair Disk Permissions. (It may not solve all minor issues with software updates; however, for most users, this fix should be adequate.)
