Mac OS X 10.3.3 (#18): More on printing problems, "page protect" errors
Yesterday we reported on a problem with printing that only affects the newest release of Safari where users receive a "Page protect needed" error.
MacFixIt reader Christian writes "I also get occasional "Page protect needed" errors when printing from Safari and some other applications to a HP Laserjet 2100 printer. According to HP such errors "are caused when the complexity of the page does not allow the printer to create the image fast enough to keep pace with the engine's printing process". The error first occurred after upgrading to OSX 10.3; I believe they are less frequent in Mac OS X 10.3.3.
The problem can be solved- By altering the "page protect" setting of the printer via the HP Laserjet Utility (runs in the classic environment only) which, however, may cause slower printing, or
- By reducing the resolution in the print dialog (Print->Image Quality->Printer resolution)
Creating a new user For other printing problems that crop up in Mac OS X 10.3.3, creating a new user restores correct functionality:

"After all the usual steps (repaired permissions, reinstalled Combo update, checked plist, etc) nothing worked. But in a happy ending, I created a new user (non-admin) then added printer from this new user and it worked great! The Printer setup utility saw the printer and added it no fuss."
