Mac OS X 10.1 Apple has seeded a beta version of Mac OS X 10.1 to developers (build 5G15). It is available from the Apple Developer Connect site (if you are a Select or Premier member). The file is a whopping download of more than 450MB. An updated version of the Developers Tools CD and a new version of Disk Copy is also included. The new Disk Copy is essential, as you use it to create a disk image from the downloaded file and then burn a CD from the image. This CD is then used to install the update. For those developers who don't want to hassle with the download method, Apple is also shipping CDs with the software this week.

Finally, at least as of this beta, you will have to do a clean install of the OS; it does not support installing over previous versions. Sleep mode is also not yet supported.

Update: Due to high demand which in turn led to difficulties in downloading the file, Apple has temporarily pulled the Mac OS X 10.1 beta update from its site. It will return after Apple increases the server capacity for the file.

Mac OS 9.2 Apple also continues to work on a new version of Mac OS 9.2.x (code-named Limelight and now at version f7) which is limited to run only on G3 and G4 Macs. It will presumably ship with Mac OS X 10.1 and appears to be newer than the Mac OS 9.2 version that currently ships with QuickSilver G4s.
