Lucent steps toward video DSL

Lucent Technologies introduced Wednesday additional technology that will make it easier for telecom carriers to offer video services over DSL (digital subscriber line) high-speed Internet equipment. The hardware supplements Lucent's Stinger line of DSL gear and offers Internet users download connections that are up to six times faster than current speeds. The additional technology enables carriers to offer HDTV (high-definition television). Lucent said Canada-based SaskTel is the first carrier to use the new gear, which runs on IP (Internet protocol) as well as ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) telecom standards.
